I had been looking forward to the new album release from Third Day and following their updates on Facebook.  I could not wait for the new album, “Miracle”.  Unfortunately, when I received “Miracle” my initial response was disappointment.  However, after listening to it multiple times there are some songs that will have you singing them all day, especially “Hit Me Like A Bomb” and “Kicking and Screaming”.  The replay-ability for this album is high because of the catchy songs and Powell’s smooth voice.  My children love the song, “Hit Me Like A Bomb”.

This album reminds me of “Conspiracy #5″.  In fact, I had the same feelings listening to this album as I did when I first heard “Conspiracy #5″.  I was hoping for more of a Southern Rock feel like “Move” had, but I was surprised to hear a very different style on this album.  I felt this work was more contemporary sounding than most of the past albums.  At times I felt like this was Third Day performing NEEDTOBREATHE, Cat Stevens, and Casting Crowns.  There were a couple of songs still carrying the Third Day sound we are used to like, “I Want To Believe In You”, “Take Me Back”, and “Time’s Running Out On Me”.  One of the highlights for me was the remake of Cat Stevens’ song, “Morning Has Broken”.  I thought it was a brave attempt that will have some people talking.  They did the original justice while adding their own flair.  There may be some critics about them doing this song since Stevens is no longer known as Stevens, but Yusuf Islam.  Yes, Cat Stevens, one of the most powerful and recognizable voices, is now a Muslim.

As for the message within the songs, I felt it was mediocre.  In some of the songs I could not tell if they were Christian artists or just clean entertainment.  This album will be a great one to play at a youth outing or a BBQ, but not one you can teach great spiritual lessons from.  This work seems as if they were more worried about sound and replay- ability and less about message.

Overall, this is a fair album that you can sing along to with your children.  The production is very professional, the message is mediocre, and their style is expanding.  I am hoping this album is like “Conspiracy #5″ giving Third Day an opportunity to mature into something new.  If you recall, just after “Conspiracy #5″ is when things really took off for Mac and the boys with, “Time”, “Offerings”, “Come Together” and “Wire”.

These guys are great! I’m looking forward to seeing the videos for my favorite tracks such as “Hit Me Like A Love Bomb” but lately I’ve been watching the video for “I Need A Miracle” on their website, and I just can’t help but feel inspired. http://www.thirdday.com
